SNP test on road funding

SNP test on road funding

Scottish Councils are to share an extra £15m from the SNP Scottish Government to cover the impact of winter conditions on Scotland's roads. Up to a tenth of Scotland's road network is thought to require urgent work to repair damage caused by the severe weather.

Nanette Milne, Conservative MSP for the North East has called on SNP Ministers to ensure a fair share of funding for North East Councils.

Nanette Milne, Conservative MSP for the North East said:

“I welcome the fact that SNP Ministers have listened to concerns that local Councils across Scotland face major difficulties in repairing roads damaged by the severe winter weather Scotland has seen.

“The fact that COSLA has been given the job of allocating this additional £50m to councils does not fill me with confidence and given the central belt bias which has developed within the SNP at Holyrood I am concerned that the North East could lose out.

“SNP Ministers are happy to continue to preside over a local government funding formula which sees both Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Councils receive a lower share of funding per head of population, a formula which is overseen by COSLA. I have concerns that extra £15m announced by the SNP Scottish government to cover the impact of winter conditions on Scotland's roads will also see the North East short changed by the SNP.

“I will be writing to the new SNP Transport Minister to highlight the needs of both Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Councils and to ask that they receive their fair share.”
